For instance obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS), a common problem in children, is now being recognized as a cause of daytime attention and behavioral problems. In comparison to adults, young children do not understand the symptoms of sleep apnea so that makes diagnosis more complicated.</p>
<p>Symptoms of sleep apnea are oftentimes regarded as symptoms of other behavioral problems when parents lack the basic knowledge. Unlike other health conditions that come with warning signs well ahead of time, by the time warning signs show up with high cholesterol you may already be in mortal danger.</p>
<p>The best and only sure way to catch high cholesterol before it causes major damage is to get checked up by a doctor regularly.</p>
<p>That said, here are a few signs that you could have high cholesterol.</p>
<p><strong>==&gt; Chest Pains</strong></p>
<p>If you&#8217;re experiencing chest pains and you believe you might be at risk of being in a high cholesterol category, see a doctor right away.</p>
<p>Having chest pains means that the high cholesterol has already progressed to the point where it could have a serious impact on your cardiovascular health.</p>
<p>Treat chest pains as a medical emergency. Don&#8217;t wait to get off work, don&#8217;t wait for the kids to get home from school &#8211; get to a doctor right away.</p>
<p>This is especially true if you have a history of high blood pressure.</p>
<p><strong>==&gt; Fatty Deposits in the Skin</strong></p>
<p>One relatively early warning sign is visible fatty deposits in the skin.</p>
<p>These deposits tend to appear in places where the skin creases &#8211; in the palm of the hands, in the elbows and around the eyes.</p>
<p>If you notice fatty deposits appearing in your skin, get a check-up as soon as you can.</p>
<p>Unlike chest pains, fatty deposits aren&#8217;t necessarily a red flag warning. However, it does mean that your high cholesterol levels are getting dangerously high and should probably be looked at by a doctor.</p>
<p><strong>==&gt; Other Warning Signs</strong></p>
<p>Unfortunately, there really are no other early warning signs of high cholesterol.</p>
<p>At a certain point, the only warning signs then become having a stroke or having a heart attack, both &#8220;warning signs&#8221; that could cost you your life.</p>
<p>High cholesterol is a condition that needs to be caught early by an attentive doctor. It&#8217;s not a condition that you can be on the lookout for yourself.</p>
<p>Don&#8217;t wait for warning signs to appear before trying to take care of your high cholesterol issues.</p>
<p><strong>==&gt; What to Ask Your Doctor</strong></p>
<p>If you think you&#8217;re at right of having abnormally high cholesterol but your doctor hasn&#8217;t told you so yet, what should you do?</p>
<p>Start by getting in the habit of tracking your LDL (&#8220;bad&#8221; cholesterol) level. Ask your doctor for your cholesterol level and keep track of it over time. Is it going up or down?</p>
<p>Ask your doctor where your target range should be. Are you within that range?</p>
<p>If you&#8217;re well outside of the range you want to be, start talking to your doctor about how you might get yourself back in range.</p>
<p>Your doctor may not start the conversation until your cholesterol levels are much higher than they should be. If that&#8217;s the case, you might want to pre-emptively start talking about high cholesterol options to get a head start on this condition.</p>

For some, this is like starting from the ground up &#8211; maybe you&#8217;re new to the whole cooking-at-home thing. For others, it may be a matter of improving the healthy nature of your cooking. Regardless, it can help to have a list of healthy cooking equipment basics. Here are some suggestions.</p>
<p><strong>Pots and Pans</strong></p>
<p>You really don&#8217;t need anything fancy in the way of pots and pans, but many sources will tell you that a few durable pieces are superior than buying cheaper, more delicate ones that need to be replaced every year or so.</p>
<p>For durability, it&#8217;s hard to beat cast iron. Families have been known to pass down cast iron skillets for generations, because they are practically indestructible! Also, it&#8217;s been shown that cooking in cast iron imparts iron into the food, which boosts its nutritive value. So for healthy cooking, you may want to invest in some cast iron cookware. Other materials with a healthy, durable reputation include enamelware and copper-bottom stainless steel.</p>
<p><strong>Pressure Cooker</strong></p>
<p>This piece of kitchen equipment is a wonderful time- and nutrient-saver. If you want to cook dried beans at the last minute, you can do so in a pressure cooker. Healthy foods like brown rice that can take almost an hour to cook conventionally can be fully cooked in 25 minutes in a pressure cooker. The same is true for vegetables and meats. And because the cooking time is shortened so dramatically, valuable nutrients are said to be preserved.</p>
<p>Pressure cookers come in various models, from very expensive, large, stainless steel models to inexpensive, smaller, anodized aluminum models.</p>
<p><strong>Blender</strong></p>
<p>Eating healthy is a lot easier with a blender. You can become the smoothie master if you have a nice blender in your kitchen, and it does not have to be expensive. They are not just good for smoothies; blenders can be used to make creamy mashed sweet or white potatoes, to grind up grains, crush ice, and add &#8220;hidden&#8221; vegetables to sauces and soups. You can use them to make fruit purees to freeze into popsicles, too. A blender really helps with healthy food preparation.</p>
<p><strong>Juicer</strong></p>
<p>A juicer is something like a specialized blender, and it&#8217;s considered indispensable by many health experts. A juicer differs from a blender in that it removes the tough plant fibers of popular juicing foods like wheat grass and carrots, and turns them into a vitamin-rich drink. Some sources point out that the nutrients in the foods are released into your bloodstream more quickly when your digestive system does not have to contend with the fiber.</p>
<p><strong>Good Knives</strong></p>
<p>You really don&#8217;t need a full set of knives. Two or three really good ones will do, along with a sharpener. A good knife can last a lifetime, and can make a world of difference in food preparation. If you have a good knife, you can tackle whole foods like winter squash, and you can produce healthy chopped veggies in record time. A paring knife, bread knife, and large chopping knife are a good place to start.</p>
<p><strong>Kitchen Scale</strong></p>
<p>This is not a waste of counter space. A good kitchen scale can really help you with healthy cooking. Nothing beats it for portion control, calorie counting, and precise measuring in the kitchen.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>When you shop for conventional beef, poultry, and eggs at the grocery store, the animals that produced that food were likely fed grain. Typically, corn and soybeans (which are plentiful, easy-to-grow crops) are fed to animals raised for meat and eggs. However, there is a move back to the old-fashioned way of raising farm animals, which is to let them graze on pasture.</p>
<p>Pastured and/or grass-fed animals are, obviously, raised on a diet that is different than their grain-eating counterparts. If you find grass-fed or pastured meat and eggs in your store, it&#8217;s likely more expensive, too. Why? Are there advantages to this way of raising meat- and egg-producing animals? Here are some things to consider about the advantages of grass-fed and pastured foods.</p>
<p><strong>Food Safety</strong></p>
<p>Studies in the late 90s showed a much lower count of E. coli bacteria in grass-fed beef than in grain-fed. Research also indicates that even the E. coli that is found in grass-fed beef is much more likely to succumb to the beef-eater&#8217;s stomach acid, and therefore not pose a health threat.</p>
<p><strong>Nutritive Value</strong></p>
<p>Multiple sources point to grass-fed meat&#8217;s nutritional superiority, particularly with regard to healthy fats. If you&#8217;ve ever seen the yolks of pastured chickens&#8217; eggs, you can see a definite color difference and taste it, too.</p>
<p>Grass-fed beef and poultry also taste different. That&#8217;s because it is different! Concerns about the saturated fat found in beef may well be offset by the healthy benefits of the Omega-3&#8242;s, Omega-6&#8242;s, and CLAs in grass-fed meats.</p>
<p>Grass-fed meats are generally leaner anyhow. Animals that are fed grains are being fattened for market quickly, and that fat, of course, gets passed on to the consumer.</p>
<p><strong>Environmental Advantages</strong></p>
<p>It&#8217;s been said that the only sustainable way to grow animals for food is to pasture them. The reasons for this are various, but the most obvious one is that pasturing animals makes good use of the land. Grain-fed animals are generally kept in feed lots, and the crowded conditions make for problems with managing the animals&#8217; waste, and storm run-off from feed lots may be contaminated with this waste.</p>
<p>Also, in order to feed grain-fed animals on feed lots, an enormous amount of land must be dedicated to one or two basic crops that the animals eat. By contrast, pasture-feeding animals encourages biodiversity of plants which is said to be much better for the surrounding ecosystems.</p>
<p><strong>Animal Welfare</strong></p>
<p>Let&#8217;s face it &#8211; animals just seem happier when they are allowed to range over pasture land. Disease is less common when animals are not crowded together on feed lots, and animals are generally treated more humanely in pasture situations.</p>

However, there are some tricks and tips for getting your kids to eat healthily and loving it. Here are some ideas to get your family started on the road to healthy eating.</p>
<p><strong>Veggies in Disguise</strong></p>
<p>There are all sorts of ways to sneak vegetables into everyday foods. Try some of these:</p>
<p>* Steam and puree carrots, winter squash, or sweet potatoes and stir them into a cheese sauce.<br />
* Put a jar of spaghetti sauce into the blender. Add lightly steamed veggies and whiz them into the spaghetti sauce.<br />
* Mince broccoli and add it to the toppings on homemade pizza.</p>
<p><strong>Replace One Thing at a Time</strong></p>
<p>It&#8217;s understandable for kids not to want to eat healthy food if they suddenly go from frozen chicken nuggets to something totally new, like quinoa. Instead, try transitioning slowly, replacing one food at a time. Here are some tips.</p>
<p>* Replace whole wheat flour with white. You can do this in all sorts of ways &#8211; replace your pasta with whole wheat pasta, for instance, and your bread with whole wheat bread. Even better, start making your own bread instead of buying it at the store. Slowly replace store-bought grain items with whole grain options, from cereal to bread to crackers.</p>
<p>* Make your own fish and chicken nuggets from whole meat that&#8217;s been cut into bite-sized pieces. Coated in bread crumbs and baked in the oven, these healthy versions are just as tasty.</p>
<p>* Mix less healthy food with healthy food to make the transition easier. For instance, begin by replacing 1/3 or so of white rice with brown or wild rice. Then gradually increase the brown rice.</p>
<p><strong>Read Books</strong></p>
<p>Read books on healthy eating, and about how the body needs healthy food to grow. There are books available for just about any age on this subject, and many kids find it quite inspiring once they understand how their body works. Take a little time to teach your kids why we need healthy food.</p>
<p><strong>Food Is Positive</strong></p>
<p>Try approaching food in a positive way. Have your kids help in the kitchen if you can; when they &#8220;own&#8221; a food or dish they may be more likely to eat it. As you work in the kitchen, talk to your kids about the important nutrients within the foods you&#8217;re preparing. To keep things positive, it may not be a good idea to get into a big battle &#8211; try to keep it upbeat and, if you can, remove &#8220;dessert&#8221; from the premises!</p>

<p>Don&#8217;t Cut Out All Fat</p>
<p>This is a mistake that some low-fat diet enthusiasts make &#8211; they simply decide to eat no fat whatsoever. There&#8217;s a problem with that approach &#8211; it fails to take into account your body&#8217;s need for fat. Some vitamins, such as the very important Vitamin D, are fat soluble, which means you won&#8217;t absorb them without the presence of fat. So make sure you include some healthy fats, such as olive oil, in your recipes.</p>
<p>Replace High-Fat with Low-Fat</p>
<p>Look in your fridge and see what high-fat foods you can replace. That way, you&#8217;ll have low-fat versions on hand for cooking. Dairy products are especially easy to find in low to no-fat versions. Health experts recommend low-fat rather than fat-free for dairy products, because your body will have a hard time absorbing the Vitamin D in dairy products without some fat.</p>
<p>Chicken, beef, and vegetable stock also come in fat-free versions, which are convenient to have on hand for all sorts of dishes. You can also use the broth to sauté instead of oil.</p>

<p>Keep your kitchen stocked with lean beef, poultry, and fish. In addition, fatty fish is a good source of healthy fats, so you can always keep some salmon or Arctic char on hand, too.</p>

<p>Learn how to bake, broil, steam, and poach foods instead of frying them. For sautéing, you can use broth instead of oil, or use the sauté as a chance to get some healthy oil into your diet.</p>

<p>Let&#8217;s face it &#8211; cast iron cookware may be durable, but it does require more &#8220;grease&#8221; than non-stick cookware. In fact, you need to keep cast iron oiled for it to perform well. Using non-stick cookware enables you to cook foods without a lot of added fat to prevent sticking.</p>
<p>Low-Fat Baking &#8211; Substitutes</p>
<p>Did you know that fruit purees &#8211; particularly prune and apple &#8211; can replace some of the fat in many baked goods?
