More than likely you have heard of all the new tofu dessert recipes that have been going around, and while things like tofu cheese cake can be good they are only imitations of the original recipe.  What you may not know is that in Asia there are tofu dessert recipes that specifically are created with tofu in mind.  Tofu in Japan can and is eaten as a dessert often.  Below is a tofu dessert recipe that is not only original, but authentic as well.

What Is Dessert Tofu?

Dessert Tofu is known by many names that include taho, kembang tahu, tofu fa, dohua, dofu nao, dou hwa, tawa or dau hu.   In the United States it is primarily known as tofu pudding or soybean custard.  Below is an authentic and original tofu dessert recipe:

Ingredients:

4 cups of fresh, natural soy milk
1 teaspoon gypsum powder
1 teaspoon potato starch
2 teaspoons corn starch
3 tablespoons water

Take the soymilk and bring it to a rolling boil for one minute then remove the heat.   While this is cooling, take the powder and starches and mix them with three tablespoons of water.  You can use either a wooden spoon or chopst

icks to mix this up, but whichever you choose make sure that it is well mixed.  Continue to stir this mixture right up until when you pour it into the boiling hot soymilk.   After you pour in the mixture, immediately cover the pot with a lid or plate and let it sit for ten to fifteen minutes.  After this is done you will have the base for your tofu dessert recipe.

You now need to decide what to put on top.   There are several different syrups you can put on top with traditional ones being either caramel or ginger.   For the caramel syrup you can use a store bought one, or simply make your own using brown sugar and water in a roughly fifty fifty ratio, one cup sugar to one cup water.  For increased thickness ad more sugar, for thinner more water.  I addition you can mix in lemon juice, vinegar, or ginger for unique flavor.

For a ginger syrup you use fresh ginger, water, and regular white sugar.   The ratio on how these are mixed is up to you based on taste, but you want to have enough ginger to ensure that the flavor comes through.

Take either of the syrups and drizzle generously on the tofu for a wonderful dessert.  There you have it, a simple tofu dessert recipe that you can serve with any meal, not just Asian food.   Hope you enjoy it!
